Towing A Caravan With 1.9 Diesel (130hp)

I currently have a 1996 2.0 petrol Galaxy that lacks 'grunt' when pulling the air-brake (caravan). Has anyone any experiences with the 130 bhp 1.9 diesel (manual gearbox) when towing said device? Information on fuel economy would be interesting!

we have a 1.9TDI 115 auto - and it tows very well.

you have an extra 15 bhp, so you should be fine, what weight is your van?

I have a 1.9 130bhp, and although having not yet towed with it, bought it specifically for the towing capability. This was partly based on some friends who have a 115bhp 1.9 Seat. There are six of them in the car towing the 18ft caravan which contains 5 bikes the awning and all the usual caravan add ons. They have always said how well it tows, but notice a considerable drop in economy from about 38-40mpg without caravan to 20-25 with.

Personally I think that is a very good trade off as I previously had a 2.3 Turbo Volvo 940 that only did 23mpg on a run without towing!

Thanks. We have a Bailey Ranger 500/5 @ 1250kg.

it will tow that fine! - and yes it is a good tow car.

our van weighs 1,350KGs loaded - and we were getting 28mpg - thats when our MAF sensor was broke, dunno what it will do now we have a new MAF.

but yeah - that outfit is fine - just follow the usual procedures lol

mmmmmmmm we just got back from Devon - 230 miles towing.

on the way there traffic was bad and took 7 hours to get there - including stops.

on the way home it took 5 hours - including stops.

on the way there we got 24mpg

on the way back, we got 24 mpg

reasons being - traffic on the way there. - and i wasn't exactly driving economically.

it has no problem at all towing our caravan (which was fully loaded with everything!)

ohh, and i also slept in the car on the last night - on an airbed - it was better than the end bedroom (a tent that attaches to awning)

Erm, didn't we do the sums and discover you couldn't tug the van on your licence?

No need, I just made that up, I don't know if he has. He is a honest, safe driver though, so I think he most likely has.

lol   yes i have passed my B+E car and trailer test.

nikpv/mumof4 - maybe i wanted to get away from the parents! you don't know what their like once they've been in the same room for a few days.

as for being a safe driver - i try my best, and up to yet - have had no problems/bumps/accidents - which is more than can be said for some of my mates!

we now tow with a 130

we used to have a 115 and the difference is amazing (I can use 6th gear nearly all the time the 115 would not pull in 6th)

mmmmm....that's interesting. I would guess that there was a problem with your previous car, because if you look at the torque curves for the 115 and 130, they are almost identical up to around 3000 rpm, which means that the towing performance would be very similar indeed - after all, 3000 rpm equates to around 75mph in 4th, 90mph in 5th and 105mph in 6th.

we tow with a 90 bhp tuning boxed 1.9 sharan (5sp) it works well, sits at 60-65 on motorway, really stable, don't know about fuel consumption but it's bound to be better than my 3.0 petrol omega doing the same job so who cares, i'd not thought of the 3.5t total train weight for new drivers, i guess 1900kg (sharan) + 1600 for twin axle would be pushing it, we tow a 1275 all up van though, and have been driving since 89 so no problems :16:

and i'm posting this from our awning on the Moreton-in-march caravan club site so top that :P

Myfirst galaxy was new only had 8000 miles on clock the current one has done 20000 perhaps that would explain difference
